Outreach Talk – Lieu Zi Zhao Robert

New advances in genome engineering

Speaker:
Dr Lieu Zi Zhao Robert

Synopsis:
The information required for basic cellular life is encoded in its DNA blueprint. Advances in the last 50-60 years have allowed us to understand how this genetic information is stored, replicated, translated, and eventually passed down to the next generation. Much of what we know and understand about our genetic function comes from studies of individual gene knockout and their relationship with observable cellular phenotype. This talk will focus on using a novel genetic tool, CRISPR-Cas, to manipulate and edit the genome of organisms. I will cover the basics of the CRISPR-Cas system, applications of CRISPR-Cas to emerging biological/medical problems as well as the ethical and societal issues surrounding genome editing.
