NANOSCALE THERMOMETRY AND GRAPHITE INTERCALATION BY PROF. CHRIS REGAN FROM UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA-LOS ANGELES

Please join us for an upcoming seminar by Prof. Chris Regan from University of California-Los Angeles, hosted by A/Prof Utkur Mirsaidov.

The details are as follows:

Date: Thu, 16/11/2017 – 11:00am to 12:00pm
Venue: CA2DM Theory Common (S16-06)

Nanoscale thermometry and Graphite Intercalation

In this informal talk I will present two topics related only by their shared connection to in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM).  Recently we have been developing a thermometry technique which has the potential to achieve spatial resolution approaching the atomic limit.  Based on mapping the bulk plasmon energy, this technique requires no exotic hardware and could be implemented on any TEM equipped with electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS).  Our target application is mapping the thermal gradients inside an operating, highly-scaled transistor.  If time allows, I will also describe our efforts to observe and understand the electrochemical intercalation of graphite, a process fundamental to the operation of most rechargeable battery technologies.
