Polymerase Chain Reaction & Agarose Gel Electrophoresis Workshop

Polymerase Chain Reaction & Agarose Gel Electrophoresis Workshop

Organized by the Department of Biological Sciences, National University of Singapore

Why attend this workshop?
The Department of Biological Sciences at NUS is offering a half-day workshop to pre-university students who are keen to get hands-on experience involving Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) & Agarose Gel Electrophoresis.  Students will learn theory and practical skills, guided by our own NUS researchers, postgraduates and technical staff.  This would be an excellent opportunity for students to gain experience working in a university laboratory.

What do students learn at the workshop?

  • To learn the theoretical principles of PCR
  • To gain hands-on familiarity with the procedures involved in PCR amplification of DNA
  • To develop a basic understanding of electrophoretic theory
  • To gain hands-on familiarity with the procedures involved in agarose gel electrophoresis to separate DNA molecules.

Who is eligible?
Pre-university students from local junior colleges or private schools.  Schools are encouraged to submit group registrations for their students.  A minimum participation of 20 students is required to commence a session.

How long will the workshop take?
Half day.
