Meet our Scholars
NUS Amgen Scholars Program 2023 welcomed 23 scholars with different backgrounds and from different countries around the world to the National University of Singapore where they spent their summer, working intensively for 2-months on exciting projects with leading teams of researchers from the department of Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Microbiology & Immunology, Pharmacology, and Physiology.
What do our scholars have to say about the program?
“The NUS Amgen Scholars Program has significantly boosted my confidence in navigating a laboratory environment, while also equipping me with the necessary skills for my future scientific career. This program has also been an invaluable source of knowledge and growth, whether through conducting daily experiments or through exploring Singapore with peers from diverse backgrounds. I am truly grateful of the chance to have been a part of this bright, warm, and international community of Amgen Scholars!“
~ Yukie Chang, NUS Amgen Scholars 2023, Pomona College, USA
“I selected the program at NUS not only for an opportunity to undertake research in world-class laboratories but also to engage with more undergraduates from my cohort as well as from other cohorts at the Amgen Scholars Asia Symposium. The program helped me explore my field of interest, work in it and learn techniques related to it. On a more general front, I have learnt numerous soft skills- creating and presenting a scientific poster, scientific presentation etc.“
~ Saloni Gole, NUS Amgen Scholar 2023, Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India
“The NUS Amgen Scholars Program has helped me gain experience in basic scientific research, which I have a newfound appreciation for. Even though I may not pursue similar research in the future, the lab techniques and skills I learned will definitely be applicable to a wide range of research fields. The program has also given me the opportunity to live abroad on my own for the first time and make lifelong friends from so many different backgrounds.“
~ Jane Zhou, NUS Amgen Scholars Program 2023, Brown University, USA
“As an undergraduate who hopes to pursue a Ph.D. in the near future, the Amgen Scholars Program is an extremely unique and valuable opportunity for me to experience what it is like to be a graduate student. Moreover, the program also gave me the chance to talk to many like-minded friends coming from different backgrounds all around the world. It provided me with many opportunities where I could step out of my comfort zone and acquire skills to become a better scientist.”
~ Tan Wee Leng, NUS Amgen Scholar 2023, National University of Singapore, Singapore
“I enjoyed the guided approach to learning the techniques that still afforded flexibility and independence. The program has provided me with pivotal research experience, reinforced my research direction, and allowed me to forge lasting connections.“
~ Jeremy Ace F. Ng, NUS Amgen Scholar 2023, University of the Philippines, Manila, Philippines
“I found the Amgen Scholars Program very attractive as it offers an unusual end-to-end research experience for undergraduate students. It also presents me the opportunity to have hands-on experience and discussions with preeminent professors, mentors, graduate students, and other lab members in NUS. It is an honor for me to have my first hands-on research experience at NUS. The intensive research training guided by NUS lab mentors provided me with valuable experiences related to what I’m studying. This program also gave me so much to learn in a relatively short time and helped me consider further doing my Ph.D. internationally.“
~ Audrey Averina Santoso, NUS Amgen Scholar 2023, Universitas Padjadjaran, Indonesia
“Engaging in this program has enabled me to enhance and redefine my research interests. I had the privilege of attending numerous seminars, which expanded my outlook on various research methodologies and provided a platform for learning and appreciating real-world scientific investigations. Through NUS Amgen Scholars Program, I was able to meet other students who shared the same level of ambition and enthusiasm for research as I did. Being around them motivated me to delve even deeper into my research endeavors.”
~ Lee Wei Ting, NUS Amgen Scholar 2023, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore
Amgen Scholars Asia Symposium 2023
Finally, we were able to host an in person symposium and it was great to network with Amgen Scholars from the other partner universities of Kyoto University, the University of Tokyo and Tsinghua University. This year a total of 108 Amgen Scholars presented their work at the symposium through oral presentations and poster presentations. The scholars did great work over the summer and showed their enthusiasm in science research through the brilliant questions they asked after the presentations.
