Outreach Talk – Phua Siew Cheng

Mind-reading mice: optical strategies to understand neurobiology of behavior

Speaker:
Assistant Professor Phua Siew Cheng

Synopsis:
Mice are often used as models by neuroscientists to understand how the brain shapes behavior. Advances in optical technologies have now made it possible for scientists to deliver light to precise regions of the brain to visualize and control activity inside brain cells in awake freely-behaving mice. Such studies have empowered our understanding of how the brain functions through cellular networks and how dysfunction in certain brain areas can lead to behavior changes implicated in mental disorders such as depression and schizophrenia. In this talk, I will share some of the most advanced optical technologies developed for neuroscience and illustrate how they have helped scientists to illuminate understanding of our intricate minds.
