NUS Amgen 2024

Meet our Scholars

Starting a new phase of the Amgen Scholars Program, NUS welcomed 10 scholars of different backgrounds and countries from Asia this summer. Working intensively for 2-months on exciting projects with leading teams of researchers from the Departments of Biological Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, Microbiology & Immunology, and Pharmacology.

What do our scholars have to say about the program?

The NUS Amgen Scholars Program has broadened my horizon, developed my scientific research thinking and helped me build connections.
~ Yuxuan He, NUS Amgen Scholars 2024, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, China

My experience in the NUS and Amgen Scholars program helped me ensure that I want to pursue a higher degree, such as a PhD, because working in the lab helped me to be more confident about being an independent researcher and developing my ideas in the lab.
~ Islomjon Ganijon ugli Karimov, NUS Amgen Scholars 2024, Bilkent University, Uzbekistan

The laboratory training is the most significant part as it is what I was lacking before entering this program. Now that I am equipped with necessary techniques, I am more confident in pursuing my academic journey.
~ Na-Im Hajisamae, NUS Amgen Scholars 2024, Kasetsart University, Thailand

When I first heard about the Amgen scholars program, I was watching a video, which introduced some internship programs for undergraduates, and the Amgen scholars attracted me a lot, as it provided participants with an opportunity to learn cutting-edge skills and experience harmonious academic atmosphere. These benefits are what I cannot get in my home university.
~ Chenjun Su, NUS Amgen Scholar 2024, Soochow University, China

The NUS Amgen Scholars Program helped me to learn basic and advanced lab techniques and broaden my mind in science, which I consider as small pieces of one big puzzle.
~ Amir Agzamov, NUS Amgen Scholars 2024, Kozybayev University, Kazakhstan

The program has allowed me to learn more lab techniques that will be relevant for graduate schools such as immunofluorescence, and also helped me to learn more about research and graduate school in general from the day-to-day lab work to advice from my mentor. It also provided networking opportunities and also opportunities to present my work which would be useful for future presentations.
~ Teo Xin Ping Joan, NUS Amgen Scholar 2024, National University of Singapore, Singapore

Amgen Scholars Asia Symposium 2024

This year, the University of Tokyo took over the mantle to host the Amgen Scholars Asia Symposium in Tokyo, Japan. The symposium featured plenary speakers, guest lecturers, oral presentation from selected scholars and a poster session where all scholars get to showcase their work. It was a great platform to facilitate networking between scholars from all Asian host institutes, the University of Tokyo, Kyoto University, Tsinghua University, and the National University of Singapore. This new phase also saw scholars from the Melbourne University Amgen Scholars Program joining in the activities. A big thank you to the team at the University of Tokyo for a wonderfully organized symposium and being such great host.

Social Activities

The Amgen Scholars Program is not just about the science but also establishing life long friendships with like-minded people around the whole. It is through constant networking that would eventually spark innovative ideas. This year, the scholars also got to visit the Amgen Singapore Manufacturing site and participate at the Amgen Golden Ticket event to see first hand what ideas are brewing with entrepreneurs in the biomedical and pharmaceutical industry.
