NUS lecturer finds snake species not seen here in 172 years

Dr John van Wyhe, a senior lecturer at NUS Biological Sciences and Tembusu College found this snake specimen while mountain biking at Bukit Timah on 16 September. Known by its scientific name Ramphotyphlops lineatus, its presence in Singapore was deemed ‘indeterminate’ for more than a century, but since Dr van Wyhe’s encounter, the snake has now been confirmed ‘extant’.

Unlikely pollinators

For most plant owners, insects that belong to the orthopteran family, such as grasshoppers and crickets, are best described as pests that eat greenery. Professor Chou Loke Ming and Associate Professor Tan Teck Koon were conferred the award of Emeritus Professor from 1 July 2019. The Emeritus Professorship is awarded to them on their retirement to recognize their sustained and distinguished contributions in terms of scholarship and conspicuous service to the University. The inaugural Honorary Fellowship is awarded to Associate Professor Loh Chiang Shiong on his retirement to recognize his significant contributions at the faculty and department.
