The beauty of sea anemones

To re-establish this sea anemone’s identity, NUS Biological Sciences doctoral student Mr Nicholas Yap studied the original specimen kept in Berlin, characterising its external and internal anatomy, and compared it to over 50 fresh specimens collected from Singapore’s shores. He also examined other Phymanthus sea anemones found in the Southeast Asian region to distinguish the species and ascertain its geographic range
Editor-in-Chief

Professor Rudolf Meier has been elected Cladistics Editor-in-Chief for 5 years at the XXXVII. Annual Meeting of the Willi Hennig Society in Barcelona, 17 – 20 September 2018. Cladistics is a Q1 journal in ISI’s Category “Evolutionary Biology” (IF=5.877; ranked 7th out of 49 journals) and will be the only Evolutionary Biology journal with an editor-in-chief who resides in Asia.
Merck Lunch Seminar

The Department of Biological Sciences (DBS) has co-hosted a half-day Seminar with Merck on 28 Aug 2018, at the Conference Room 1 of DBS, NUS. This event was well attended by over 60 participants including researchers, staff and postgraduate students from NUS, NTU, TLL and commercial companies. With the title ”Appreciation: HPLC 101 – Tips & Tricks for Method Development and Macromolecular Analysis”, Mr Eddy Tan and Dr Lee May May from Merck have kindly shared their vast technical experiences in the fields such as HPLC troubleshooting and sample preparation for proteins with the audience. The participants have actively interacted with both speakers during the presentations, as well as the tea and lunch breaks. The Department of Biological Sciences would like to express our appreciation to Merck for making it a successful and memorable event.

Identical twin brothers Lim Xin Xiang and Lim Xin Shan, both research fellows at DBS, graduated with their PhDs at the same ceremony on July 13, 2018.
