Outreach Talk – John van Wyhe (Darwin and Wallace)

Solving the Darwin-Wallace Mystery of 1858

Speaker:
Dr John van Wyhe

Synopsis:
Alfred Russel Wallace sent an essay on his new idea of evolution by natural selection to Charles Darwin who was shocked to think it was the same theory. For decades it was widely believed, however, that Darwin lied about when he received Wallace’s essay from Southeast Asia, and perhaps used the time to borrow from it, before forwarding it as Wallace had asked. For many years historians thought this matter could not be resolved. In this talk all of these mysteries and conspiracies are resoundingly refuted.
