Imaging the hidden order in our nanometer-scale world: the rising role of machine learning
Speaker:
Assistant Professor Loh Ne-Te Duane

Synopsis:
What happens when hundreds to thousands of different atoms interact in a confined space? When does chaos always ensue, and when is there hidden order? This simple question has a staggering diversity of answers that drives much of the Physics, Chemistry, and Biology of our observable world. In this talk, I will describe the frontiers of imaging sciences that are geared towards answering this surprisingly fundamental question. Specifically, where machine learning is combining our knowledge in the Physics of imaging sciences to create new forms of “computational and statistical lenses” that goes beyond what hardware-alone can accomplish. I will also try to convince you of the importance of having multi-disciplinary scientists and engineers who are also well-versed in data science.
