Outreach Talk – Stephen Brian Pointing

Life on the edge - the microbes that thrive in extreme environments

Speaker:
Professor Pointing, Stephen Brian

Availability:
February – December 2023

Synopsis:
As humans we are used to a very narrowly defined set of environmental conditions in which we can comfortably live. Some animals and plants can tolerate more challenging conditions such as those found in deserts, polar regions and deep oceans. However, when environmental conditions become truly extreme microorganisms are the only life form capable of surviving excessive heat, salt, cold and other stressors. In this talk I will showcase the remarkable diversity of life in extreme environments and describe some of the survival mechanisms involved using examples from my own research. Finally, I will share how extreme microorganisms have impacted our lives through their application in biotechnology, as well as their importance in understanding the wider concept of habitability in our solar system.
