Outreach Talk – Ying Chang

Friends or foes? Fungi living within the mangrove plants

Speaker:
Assistant Professor Ying Chang

Availability:
March – December 2023

Synopsis:
Fungi are ubiquitous but majority of them remain elusive. Endophytic fungi live within the plant tissue and are found in nearly all plant species. But how they interact with their host plants remain to be explored. Our lab works on the endophytic fungi found in local mangrove trees. We are interested in describing the diversity of the endophytic fungi and characterizing their relationships with the hosts — are the endophytic fungi helping their hosts to deal with the various stresses associated with the mangrove environment, are they sneaky parasites on the mangrove trees, or maybe they are just hitch-hikers?
