Research Areas
Research goals in fundamental and translational (used here in the broad sense of applying basic research to human/societal benefit) research in the following areas associated with fresh waters:
-
- Freshwater biodiversity and ecology
- Aquatic invasions
- Freshwater decapod crustaceans
Current projects
Projects (together with students, staff, and collaborators) include biodiversity surveys and ecological studies of Singapore’s freshwater fauna such as plankton, invertebrates, and fishes; ecological studies of aquatic alien species in Singapore and tropical Asia; and systematics and taxonomy, and conservation of freshwater crabs and other decapod crustaceans.
-
Freshwater biodiversity and ecology – Work focuses on diversity and ecology in tropical Asian fresh waters, with emphasis on Singapore’s streams and reservoirs, including functional diversity, biodiversity responses to environmental and anthropogenic variables; food web and trophic interactions; and conservation, management and habitat restoration/rehabilitation.
-
Aquatic invasions – Investigating invasiveness, ecology, and impacts of aquatic (freshwater mostly) alien species, e.g., competitive interactions between introduced and native species. Introduced species studied have included the golden apple snail (Pomacea canaliculata), redclaw crayfish (Cherax quadricarinatus), marbled gudgeon (Oxyeleotris marmorata), Midas (Amphilophus citrinellus) and Mayan (Cichlasoma uropthalmus) cichlids, and African sharptooth catfish (Clarias gariepinus).
-
Freshwater crabs – Work includes systematic and taxonomic studies of Asian freshwater crabs; global IUCN Red List conservation assessments; and ecological and conservation studies of threatened species, e.g., the critically endangered Singapore freshwater crab (Johora singaporensis).
