Project: During my studies in Prof. Kini's lab, my aim was to understand the toxin profile of mallee black-backed snake, Parasuta nigriceps, which was not studied before. I constructed a partial cDNA library of the snake, using its venom gland. The toxin genes found in the library include serine protease
inhibitors, three-finger toxins, phospholipase A2, nerve growth
factors, c-type lectin and CRISPs.

Project: During my semester abroad at NUS, I studied intraspecific venom variation in Pakistan cobras (Naja naja) from colonies kept at venom extraction facilities. The aim of this study was to analyze factors such as age, gender, size, locality, diet, and genetic relations responsible for venom variation. The result of this study has practical applications in future venom research and antiserum production since venom for those purposes is collected from established captive colonies.

Project: We were interested in analyzing the venom profile of colubridae snake-Cerberus rynchops (dog-faced water snake) belonging to the family homalopsidae. So far, venom compositions of snakes of homalopsidae family are not known. Overall, our combined approach of transcriptomics and proteomics revealed that C. rynchops venom was among the least complex snake venom characterized to date but contains new family of snake venom proteins. |

Project: While in Professor Kini’s laboratory, I worked on constructing a cDNA library for the venom gland of the brown tree snake, Boiga irregularis. This was done in an attempt to detect novel toxin genes, as B. irregularisis a colubrid snake that is venomous but not considered harmful to humans. Overall, I sequenced inserts from 933 clones and found at least 133 toxin genes. The techniques I used for this were new to me, so I gained invaluable experience and increased my scientific toolkit. Besides everything I learned, Prof’s laboratory was a great place to work because of the wonderful, intelligent, friendly and helpful people.
