Edwin Phua Ek Kian (2010)

Edwin Edwin spent most of his time fishing in the laboratory, fishing for genes that is. Besides having to work with notoriously foul-smelling flowers, he had to put up with highly finicky and unstable RNA and cDNA. He completed the laboratory work - yet to submit his thesis. (Jointly supervised with A/P Hugh Tan)

During the project period, I learned a lot of interesting techniques: Plant growth method, manual cross pollination, PCR genotyping, construction of chimeric cassettes, cloning, floral dip transformation and so on.

Tan Jingmei Eunice (2005)

EuniceThe goal of my project was to analyze the paternity of the moss Pogonatum macrophyllum. Using two microsatellite markers that have been previously identified, together with three others identified during this study, we were able to distinguish individual genotypes. Our findings suggest that the sperm dispersal range could be from 0.7-3.5 m, a distance much greater than that previously expected.

Research Assistant, Plant Molecular Biology.

Lee Lian Lian and Jaclyn Mo Wanjun (2004-2006)

Lian Lian & JaclynThe opportunity to work in this lab has enabled us to gain the experience of working with a vast range of techniques critical to this research field. From basic molecular techniques to protein purifications, our work in the lab aimed at obtaining genetically-modified plants that are able to produce foreign proteins of pharmaceutical importance. The plants we worked with include cherry-tomatoes, petunia and Arabidopsis.
